My
collection of old-time radio programs
on over 400
16" transcription discs...
Along with a vintage
commercial quality
16" turntable on which to play them.
|
|
|
Here's
one of the 16" discs compared with a standard vinyl LP and a 45 RPM single:
|
|
These are the
rare original recordings that were distributed by various programming syndicates
to local radio stations for airplay from the mid 1940's through the early
1950's.
They are generally half-hour shows with about 15 minutes of
programming on each side.
Many of these shows were produced by the
various armed forces to be used as recruiting tools and
to help veterans
as they started families, bought homes, and adjusted to post World War II America.
Some were produced by
charity and civic groups like The Red Cross, The March of Dimes,
The American Heart Association, and
The Cooperative Forest Fire Campaign.
The
discs include drama favorites like:
The Lone Ranger, Jungle Jim, and Front Page Adventure,
plus a large number of variety shows featuring performances by stars like:
Frank
Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Bob Hope, Red Skelton, Hoagy Carmichael,
Spike Jones, Smoky Bear, Les Brown and His Band of Renown,
Jimmy Durante, Doris Day, Les Paul, Duke Ellington,
and many more...
|
|
Many of these
recordings are of exclusive performances
that have never been heard or released in any other format.
Some discs are quite possibly the only ones still in existence.
This collection could
truly be described as "museum worthy".
Go directly to the list of discs:
The turntable offered here is a
Gates model CB-500
with built in monaural two-tube preamp.
It is a professional quality unit that
was used in a commercial AM broadcast facility. The underside of the
turntable platter is stamped with the date Dec. 29, 1961.
The preamp was
recently checked and serviced by an expert in the restoration of old
radios and tube type equipment. Capacitors, tubes, and stylus were
replaced as needed. The speed of the platter is correct and stable.
A photocopy of the
service manual (with schematic) for the preamp is included.
The platter rotates
on a single ball bearing that is lubricated with light machine oil. For
shipping, it will be best to remove the platter and plug the shaft so that
the oil and ball bearing are secure. Thus, you will need to drop the
platter back into position for use.
of the turntable's innards.
You will also need to
reattach the leads from the tone arm to the preamp since the tone arm will
be removed for shipping too. This involves handling some tiny wires and
doing a bit of soldering. The manual will make this step
perfectly clear. It's a fairly straight forward hook-up but some
experience in working with electronic equipment will be helpful.
Output from the
preamp can be fed directly to the line level input of a suitable amplifier
or even to the line input of a computer soundcard.
The turntable is
being offered with the cabinet shown below, but if you do not wish to deal
with shipping this large piece of furniture the turntable can be removed
and shipped separately. (In that case you will need to provide
your own housing for it.) |
|
|
With its tube preamp and
adjustable equalization
settings, this turntable would be an excellent
machine for playing your other vintage records too.
Including 78's and 45's.
(A pop-up adaptor for 45's is built into the platter.) |
|
|
|
The turntable's cabinet is made of
pressed wood with a Formica style laminate.
This cabinet was not originally built for use with the
turntable - I had the top custom modified for this purpose.
However, the cabinet was designed for
use in a broadcast facility and it was made to accept standard size rack-mounted
electronic equipment. It has four metal feet that are adjustable for leveling
and there is
also a drawer (not shown) that can mount in the upper left side. |

Back
to the top :
AND NOW, ON TO
THE 400+ RECORDINGS:
Each disc has been rated according to
the following system:
A = Excellent, almost like new, very few if
any scratches.
B = Small number of superficial
scratches, a program like Sound Forges Vinyl Repair should make this sound
like new.
C = Larger number of scratches but still
playable, a more aggressive software package should clean these up as well.
D = Either a very large number of
scratches or some very deep ones.
Below is a list of
each record with the series name, program number, some show details,
my condition rating for that disc, and a representative picture of the label
associated with each series.
PLEASE NOTE:
Some discs have been given
two condition ratings - for example, A & C - when the two sides have significant
differences in wear.
Parts 1 & 2 of
some programs were split onto two discs. This was done so that the DJ could play
a
program
in sequence using two turntables rather than having to manually flip a record in
mid-show.
About 3/4 of the discs are in protective
sleeves & about 1/4 are not, however, I have stored them so that no two
un-sleeved discs are in contact with each other.
Some discs have been marked with the
date they were played on the air, some have a DJ's name or other info written on
the labels.
Also interesting to note is
that while most of these discs are played in the normal manner of starting with
the stylus at the outside edge, a few are designated as "Start Inside" so that
the stylus travels outward as the record plays. What will they think of next?
